can you put this directly against a wall and still be able to open the drawer?

It maybe instead against the side wall but a 3/4" filler is recommended. Pay attention to your baseboards and door casing. If you have baseboards taller than 4 1/2" tall , and a door casing closer the 12". This will interfere with opening the drawers.
